أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ أَنَّ عُبَيْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ أَبَاهُ كَتَبَ إِلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْأَرْقَمَ الزُّهْرِيِّ يَأْمُرُهُ أَنْ يَدْخُلَ عَلَى سُبَيْعَةَ بِنْتِ الْحَارِثِ الْأَسْلَمِيَّةِ فَيَسْأَلَهَا عَنْ حَدِيثِهَا وَمَا قَالَ

لَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حِينَ اسْتَفْتَتْهُ فَكَتَبَ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ يُخْبِرُهُ أَنَّ سُبَيْعَةَ أَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّهَا كَانَتْ تَحْتَ سَعْدِ بْنِ خَوْلَةَ وَهُوَ مِنْ بَنِي عَامِرِ بْنِ لُؤَيٍّ وَكَانَ مِمَّنْ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا فَتُوُفِّيَ عَنْهَا فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ وَهِيَ حَامِلٌ فَلَمْ تَنْشَبْ أَنْ وَضَعَتْ حَمْلَهَا بَعْدَ وَفَاتِهِ فَلَمَّا تَعَلَّتْ مِنْ نِفَاسِهَا تَجَمَّلَتْ لِلْخُطَّابِ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا أَبُو السَّنَابِلِ بْنُ بَعْكَكٍ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي عَبْدِ الدَّارِ فَقَالَ لَهَا مَالِي أَرَاكِ مُتَجَمِّلَةً لَعَلَّكِ تُرِيدِينَ النِّكَاحَ إِنَّكِ وَاللهِ مَا أَنْتِ بِنَاكِحٍ حَتَّى تَمُرَّ عَلَيْكِ أَرْبَعَةُ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرٌ قَالَتْ سُبَيْعَةُ فَلَمَّا قَالَ لِي ذَلِكَ جَمَعْتُ عَلَيَّ ثِيَابِي حِينَ أَمْسَيْتُ فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَأَفْتَانِي بِأَنِّي قَدْ حَلَلْتُ حِينَ وَضَعْتُ حَمْلِي «وَأَمَرَنِي بِالتَّزْوِيجِ إِنْ بَدَا لِي»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told her when she sought his ruling. 'Umar b. 'Abd Allah wrote to 'Abd Allah b. 'Utbah informing him that Subay'ah told him that she was married to Sa'd b. Khawlah, who was from Banu 'Amir b. Lu'ayy and was among those who witnessed Badr. He died during the Farewell Pilgrimage while she was pregnant. She did not remain long before giving birth after his death. When she recovered from her postpartum bleeding, she adorned herself for suitors. Abu al-Sanabil b. Ba'kak, a man from Banu 'Abd al-Dar, entered upon her and said: Why do I see you adorned? Perhaps you intend to marry. By Allah, you are not marrying until four months and ten days have passed. Subay'ah said: When he said that to me, I gathered my clothes when evening came and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about that. He ruled that I had become lawful when I gave birth and commanded me to marry if I wished.
