✧ Marriage of the son to his mother

أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ابْنِ عُلَيَّةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ الْبُنَانِيِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ

عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ لَمَّا انْقَضَتْ عِدَّتُهَا بَعَثَ إِلَيْهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَخْطُبُهَا عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ تَزَوِّجْهُ ثُمَّ بَعَثَ إِلَيْهَا عُمَرُ يَخْطُبُهَا فَلَمْ تَزَوِّجْهُ فَبَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَيْهَا عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يَخْطُبُهَا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَتْ أَخْبِرْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَنِّي امْرَأَةٌ غَيْرَى وَأَنِّي امْرَأَةٌ مُصْبِيَةٌ وَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِي شَاهِدٌ فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ «ارْجِعْ إِلَيْهَا فَقُلْ لَهَا أَمَّا قَوْلُكِ أَنِّي امْرَأَةٌ غَيْرَى فَسَأَدْعُو اللهَ فَيُذْهِبُ غَيْرَتَكِ وَأَمَّا قَوْلُكِ إِنِّي امْرَأَةٌ مُصِيبَةٌ فَسَتُكْفَيْنَ صِبْيَانَكِ وَأَمَّا قَوْلُكِ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِي شَاهِدٌ فَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِكِ شَاهِدٌ وَلَا غَائِبٌ يَكْرَهُ ذَلِكَ» فَقَالَتْ لِابْنِهَا يَا عُمَرُ قُمْ فَزَوِّجْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَزَوَّجَهُ مُخْتَصَرٌ

✧ From Umm Salamah: when her waiting period ended, Abu Bakr sent to her to propose on his behalf, but she did not marry him. Then Umar sent to her to propose, but she did not marry him. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Umar b. al-Khattab to her to propose on his behalf. She said: "Tell the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that I am a jealous woman, and I am a woman with children, and none of my guardians is present." He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said: "Return to her and say to her: As for your saying, 'I am a jealous woman,' I will supplicate Allah and He will remove your jealousy. As for your saying, 'I am a woman with children,' you will be relieved of your children. As for your saying, 'None of my guardians is present,' there is none of your guardians, present or absent, who dislikes that." She said to her son: "O Umar, stand up and marry the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to me." So he married her. Abridged.
