أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ قَالَ
لَمَّا قَسَمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ سَهْمَ ذِي الْقُرْبَى بَيْنَ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ وَبَنِي الْمُطَّلِبِ أَتَيْتُهُ أَنَا وَعُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَؤُلَاءِ بَنُو هَاشِمٍ لَا يُنْكَرُ فَضْلُهُمْ لِمَكَانِكَ الَّذِي جَعَلَكَ اللهُ بِهِ مِنْهُمْ أَرَأَيْتَ بَنِي الْمُطَّلِبِ أَعْطَيْتَهُمْ وَمَنَعْتَنَا وَإِنَّمَا نَحْنُ وَهُمْ مِنْكَ بِمَنْزِلَةٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّهُمْ لَمْ يُفَارِقُونِي فِي جَاهِلِيَّةٍ وَلَا إِسْلَامٍ إِنَّمَا بَنُو هَاشِمٍ وَبَنُو الْمُطَّلِبِ شَيْءٌ وَاحِدٌ وَشَبَّكَ بَيْنَ أَصَابِعِهِ»

✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ divided the share of the near relative between Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib, I and ʿUthman b. ʿAffan came to him and said: "O Messenger of God, these are Banu Hashim—their excellence is not denied because of the position God placed you in among them. But consider Banu al-Muttalib: you gave them and denied us, while we and they are in the same position from you." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "They did not separate from me in ignorance or in Islam. Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib are one thing," and he interlocked his fingers.
