✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he said, “Will you not pledge allegiance?” He repeated it three times. We extended our hands and pledged allegiance to him. We said, “O Messenger of Allah, we have pledged allegiance to you, but on what?” He said, “On that you worship Allah, associating nothing with Him, and [perform] the five prayers.” And he whispered a hidden word: “Do not ask people for anything.” Abu ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said to us: Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī’s name is ʿĀʾidh Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh, and Abū Muslim al-Khawlānī’s name is ʿAbd Allāh b. Thawb.
