✧ The beginning of fasting on the day of Ashura, and the mention of the variation of the narrators' words in it.

أَخْبَرَنَا زِيَادُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بِشْرٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

لَمَّا قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَجَدَ الْيَهُودَ يَصُومُونَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَسُئِلُوا عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالُوا هَذَا الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي أَظْهَرَ اللهُ فِيهِ مُوسَى وَبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ عَلَى فِرْعَوْنَ وَنَحْنُ نَصُومُهُ تَعْظِيمًا لَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «نَحْنُ أَوْلَى بِمُوسَى مِنْكُمْ وَأَمَرَ بِصِيَامِهِ»

✧ When the Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah, he found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. They were asked about that, and they said: "This is the day on which Allah made Musa and the Children of Israel prevail over Pharaoh, and we fast it in veneration of it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "We have a closer connection to Musa than you," and he commanded fasting on it.
