✧ Seeking refuge from the torment of the grave

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ قُدَامَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ

دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ عَجُوزَانِ مِنْ عُجُزِ يَهُودِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَقَالَتَا إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْقُبُورِ يُعَذَّبُونَ فِي قُبُورِهِمْ فَكَذَّبْتُهُمَا وَلَمْ أُنْعِمْ أَنْ أُصَدِّقَهُمَا فَخَرَجَتَا وَدَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ عَجُوزَيْنِ مِنْ عُجُزِ يَهُودِ الْمَدِينَةِ قَالَتَا لِي إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْقُبُورِ يُعَذَّبُونَ فِي قُبُورِهِمْ قَالَ «صَدَقَتَا إِنَّهُمْ يُعَذَّبُونَ عَذَابًا تَسْمَعُهُ الْبَهَائِمُ كُلُّهَا فَمَا رَأَيْتُهُ صَلَّى صَلَاةً إِلَّا تَعَوَّذَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ»

✧ Two old women from among the old Jewish women of Madinah entered upon me and said, "The people of the graves are tormented in their graves." I disbelieved them and did not feel comfortable believing them. They left, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon me. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, two old women from among the old Jewish women of Madinah said to me that the people of the graves are tormented in their graves." He said, "They spoke the truth. They are tormented with a torment that all the animals can hear." I never saw him pray any prayer afterward without seeking refuge from the torment of the grave.
