أَخْبَرَنَا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ قَالَ أَرْسَلَتِ ابْنَةٌ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِلَيْهِ

أَنَّ ابْنًا لِي قُبِضَ فَأْتِنَا فَأَرْسَلَ يُقْرِئُ السَّلَامَ وَيَقُولُ «إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَا أَخَذَ وَلَهُ مَا أَعْطَى وَكُلٌّ عِنْدَهُ بِأَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى فَلْتَصْبِرْ وَلْتَحْتَسِبْ» فَأَرْسَلَتْ إِلَيْهِ تُقْسِمُ عَلَيْهِ لَيَأْتِيَنَّهَا فَقَامَ وَمَعَهُ سَعْدُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ وَمُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ وَأُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ وَزَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ وَرِجَالٌ فَرُفِعَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الصَّبِيُّ وَنَفْسُهُ تَتَقَعْقَعُ فَفَاضَتْ عَيْنَاهُ فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا هَذَا؟ قَالَ «هَذَا رَحْمَةٌ يَجْعَلُهَا اللهُ فِي قُلُوبِ عِبَادِهِ وَإِنَّمَا يَرْحَمُ اللهُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الرُّحَمَاءَ» قَالَ لَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ هُوَ النَّهْدِيُّ اسْمُهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَلٍّ

✧ A son of mine passed away, so come to us. He sent someone to convey greetings and say: "To Allah belongs what He takes, and to Him belongs what He gives, and everything with Him has an appointed term. So be patient and seek reward." She sent to him, adjuring him to come to her. He rose, and with him were Sa'd b. Ubadah, Muadh b. Jabal, Ubayy b. Ka'b, Zayd b. Thabit, and other men. The child was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while his breathing was rattling, and his eyes overflowed. Sa'd said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is this?" He said: "This is mercy that Allah places in the hearts of His servants, and Allah is merciful only to the merciful among His servants." Abu Abd al-Rahman said to us: Abu Uthman—he is al-Nahdi, his name is Abd al-Rahman b. Mall.
