أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ عُمَرَ كَانَ يَسْأَلُ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ

عَنْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ {إِذَا جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللهِ وَالْفَتْحُ} [النصر 1] فِيمَ نَزَلَتْ؟ قَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَمَرَ اللهُ نَبِيَّهُ إِذَا رَأَى النَّاسَ وَدُخُولَهُمْ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ وَتَسَرُّدَهُمْ فِي الدِّينِ أَنْ يَحْمَدُوا اللهَ وَيَسْتَغْفِرُوهُ قَالَ عُمَرُ أَلَا أُعْجِبُكُمْ مِنَ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ؟ يَا ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ هَلُمَّ مَا لَكَ لَا تَتَكَلَّمُ؟ قَالَ سَأَلَهُ مَتَى يَمُوتُ قَالَ {إِذَا جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللهِ وَالْفَتْحُ وَرَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِي دِينِ اللهِ أَفْوَاجًا} [النصر 2] فَهِيَ آيَتُكَ مِنَ الْمَوْتِ قَالَ صَدَقْتَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ مَا عَلِمْتُ مِنْهَا إِلَّا الَّذِي عَلِمْتَ

✧ Regarding this verse, ‘When the victory of Allah and the conquest comes’ [al-Naṣr:1], about what was it revealed? Some said, “Allah commanded His Prophet, when he saw the people entering Islam and coming into the religion in crowds, to praise Allah and seek His forgiveness.” ʿUmar said, “Shall I not amaze you with Ibn ʿAbbās? O Ibn ʿAbbās, come; why do you not speak?” He said, “He asked him when he would die. He said, ‘When the victory of Allah and the conquest comes, and you see the people entering the religion of Allah in crowds’ [al-Naṣr:1–2]. This is your sign of death.” He said, “You have spoken the truth. By the One in whose hand is my soul, I knew nothing from it except what you knew.”
