أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ عَنْ دَاوُدَ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

لَمَّا قَدِمَ كَعْبُ بْنُ الْأَشْرَفِ مَكَّةَ قَالَتْ لَهُ قُرَيْشٌ أَنْتَ خَيْرُ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ وَسَيِّدُهُمْ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالُوا أَلَا تَرَى إِلَى هَذَا الْمُنْبَتِرُ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ يَزْعُمُ أَنَّهُ خَيْرٌ مِنَّا وَنَحْنُ يَعْنِي أَهْلُ الْحَجِيجِ وَأَهْلُ السِّدَانَةِ قَالَ أَنْتُمْ خَيْرٌ مِنْهُ فَنَزَلَتْ {إِنْ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ} [الكوثر 3] وَنَزَلَتْ {أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا نَصِيبًا مِنَ الْكِتَابِ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْجِبْتِ وَالطَّاغُوتِ} [النساء 51] إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {فَلَنْ تَجِدَ لَهُ نَصِيرًا} [النساء 52]

✧ When Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf arrived in Mecca, the Quraysh said to him, "You are the best of the people of Medina and their leader." He responded, "Yes." They said, "Do you not see this man from his people who claims to be better than us, and we are the people of Hajj and the people of the Kāba?" He said, "You are better than him." Then, the verse was revealed, "For he who hates you, he will be cut off" (Quran 108:3). And the verse was revealed, "Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Scripture, believing in superstition and false deities?" (Quran 4:51) until His saying, "So you will never find for him a helper" (Quran 4:52).
