أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ مَسْعَدَةَ حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرٌ حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ عَنْ عَامِرٍ قَالَ
أَبُو جَبِيرَةَ بْنُ الضَّحَّاكِ فِينَا نَزَلَتِ الْآيَةُ قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَمَا مِنَّا رَجُلٌ إِلَّا لَهُ اسْمَانِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةٌ كَانَ إِذَا دَعَا الرَّجُلَ بِالِاسْمِ قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهُ يَغْضَبُ مِنْ هَذَا فَأُنْزِلَتْ {وَلَا تَنَابَزُوا بِالْأَلْقَابِ} [الحجرات 11] الْآيَةُ كُلُّهَا
Translation

✧ Abū Jubayrah b. al-Ḍaḥḥāk said: "Concerning us the verse was revealed. The Messenger of God ﷺ came to Madinah, and there was not a man among us but had two or three names. When he called a man by a name, we would say: 'O Messenger of God, he gets angry from this.' So it was revealed: {And do not insult one another with nicknames} [al-Ḥujurāt 11], the whole verse."
