أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ثَوْرٍ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ قَالَ

كُنْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَصْبَحْتُ قَرِيبًا مِنْهُ وَنَحْنُ نَسِيرُ فَقُلْتُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ أَخْبِرْنِي بِعَمَلٍ يُدْخِلُنِي الْجَنَّةَ وَيُبْعِدُنِي عَنِ النَّارِ قَالَ «لَقَدْ سَأَلْتَ عَنْ عَظِيمٍ وَإِنَّهُ لَيَسِيرٌ عَلَى مَنْ يَسَّرَهُ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ تُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةَ وَتُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ وَتَصُومُ رَمَضَانَ وَتَحُجُّ الْبَيْتَ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَلَا أَدُلُّكَ عَلَى أَبْوَابِ الْخَيْرِ؟ الصَّوْمُ جُنَّةٌ وَالصَّدَقَةُ تُطْفِئُ الْخَطِيئَةَ كَمَا يُطْفِئُ الْمَاءُ النَّارَ وَصَلَاةُ الرَّجُلِ مِنْ جَوْفِ اللَّيْلِ» ثُمَّ تَلَا {تَتَجَافَى جُنُوبُهُمْ عَنِ الْمَضَاجِعِ} [السجدة 16] حَتَّى {يَعْمَلُونَ} [السجدة 17] ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَلَا أُخْبِرُكَ بِرَأْسِ الْأَمْرِ وَعَمُودِهِ وَذِرْوَةِ سَنَامِهِ؟» قُلْتُ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «رَأْسُ الْأَمْرِ الْإِسْلَامُ وَعَمُودُهُ الصَّلَاةُ وَذِرْوَةُ سَنَامِهِ الْجِهَادُ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَلَا أُخْبِرُكَ بِمِلَاكِ ذَلِكَ كُلِّهِ؟» قُلْتُ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَأَخَذَ بِلِسَانِهِ فَقَالَ «كُفَّ عَلَيْكَ هَذَا» قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَإِنَّا لَمُؤَاخَذُونَ بِمَا نَتَكَلَّمُ بِهِ؟ قَالَ ثَكِلَتْكَ أُمُّكَ يَا مُعَاذُ وَهَلْ يَكُبُّ النَّاسَ فِي النَّارِ عَلَى وُجُوهِهِمْ أَوْ قَالَ عَلَى مَنَاخِرِهِمْ إِلَّا حَصَائِدُ أَلْسِنَتِهِمْ؟

✧ I was with the Prophet ﷺ and came near him in the morning while we were traveling. I said: “O Prophet of Allah, tell me of a deed that will admit me to Paradise and keep me far from the Fire.” He said: “You have asked about something great, yet it is easy for the one for whom Allah makes it easy: you establish prayer, give zakah, fast Ramadan, and perform Hajj to the House.” Then he said: “Shall I not direct you to the gates of good? Fasting is a shield, charity extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire, and a man’s prayer in the depths of the night.” Then he recited: {Their sides forsake their beds} [al-Sajdah 16] until {they do} [al-Sajdah 17]. Then he said: “Shall I not tell you of the head of the matter, its pillar, and the peak of its hump?” I said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “The head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is prayer, and the peak of its hump is jihad.” Then he said: “Shall I not tell you of what holds all of that together?” I said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He took hold of his tongue and said: “Restrain this.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah, will we be held accountable for what we say?” He said: “May your mother be bereft of you, O Mu'adh! Is there anything that casts people into the Fire on their faces — or he said: on their nostrils — except the harvest of their tongues?”
