أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ ثَوْرٍ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

لَمَّا حَضَرَتْ أَبَا طَالِبٍ الْوَفَاةُ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَعِنْدَهُ أَبُو جَهْلٍ وَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ فَقَالَ أَيْ عَمِّ قُلْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ كَلِمَةً أُحَاجُّ لَكَ بِهَا عِنْدَ اللهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو جَهْلٍ وَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ يَا أَبَا طَالِبٍ أَتَرْغَبُ عَنْ مِلَّةِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ؟ فَلَمْ يَزَالَا يُكَلِّمَانِهِ حَتَّى قَالَ آخِرَ شَيْءٍ كَلَّمَهُمْ عَلَى مِلَّةِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «لَأَسْتَغْفِرَنَّ لَكَ مَا لَمْ أُنْهَ عَنْكَ» فَنَزَلَتْ {مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُوا لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ} [التوبة 113] وَنَزَلَتْ {إِنَّكَ لَا تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ} [القصص 56]

✧ When Abu Talib was dying, the Prophet ﷺ entered upon him while Abu Jahl and 'Abd Allah b. Abi Umayyah were with him. He said, "O uncle, say: There is no god but God, a word by which I will plead for you before God." Abu Jahl and 'Abd Allah b. Abi Umayyah said to him, "O Abu Talib, will you turn away from the religion of 'Abd al-Muttalib?" They kept speaking to him until the last thing he said to them was: "On the religion of 'Abd al-Muttalib." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I will surely seek forgiveness for you as long as I am not forbidden from doing so." Then {It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists} [At-Tawbah: 113] was revealed, and {Indeed, you do not guide whom you love} [Al-Qasas: 56] was revealed.
