✧ That Mūsā ﷺ who went seeking knowledge is not the Mūsā of the Children of Israel. He said, “Did you hear it, O Saʿīd?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Nawf has lied. Ubayy b. Kaʿb narrated to us, saying: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: While Mūsā ﷺ was among his people reminding them of the days of God—and the days of God are His blessings and trials—he said, ‘I know of no one on earth better or more knowledgeable than me.’ So God revealed to him, ‘I know better who is good, or with whom it is. Indeed there is a man on earth more knowledgeable than you.’ He said, ‘My Lord, direct me to him.’ It was said to him, ‘Take as provision a salted fish, for wherever you lose the fish…’ He said: ‘He and his young companion set out until they reached the rock, and he was blinded. He departed and left his young companion. The fish stirred in the water and did not cease, whenever it settled, but to become like a hole.’ He said: His young companion said, ‘Should I not catch up with the Prophet of God ﷺ and inform him?’ He said, ‘But he forgot. When they had passed beyond, he said to his young companion, {Bring us our breakfast. We have certainly met with fatigue in this journey of ours} [al-Kahf: 62].’ He said, ‘No fatigue touched them until they had passed beyond.’ He said, ‘Then he remembered and said, {Did you see when we retired to the rock? Indeed I forgot the fish, and none made me forget it except Satan, that I should remember it. And it took its way into the sea amazingly. He said, “That is what we were seeking.” So they returned upon their tracks, retracing} [al-Kahf: 64].’ So he was shown the place of the fish, and he said, ‘Here it was described to me.’ He said, ‘Then he went seeking, and it was al-Khiḍr, wrapped in a garment, lying on his back. He said, “Peace be upon you.” He uncovered the garment from his face and said, “And upon you be peace. Who are you?” He said, “I am Mūsā.” He said, “Who is Mūsā?” He said, “Mūsā of the Children of Israel.” He said, “What brought you?” He said, “I have come so that you may teach me of what you have been taught sound judgment.” He said, “You will never be able to have patience with me. And how can you be patient with that which you do not encompass in awareness?” [al-Kahf: 66]—something I was commanded to do, and when you see me, you will not be patient. He said, “You will find me, if God wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in any matter. He said, “If you follow me, then do not ask me about anything until I bring about for you mention of it.” So they set out until when they had boarded the ship, he made a hole in it} [al-Kahf: 69]. He said, ‘He set upon it.’ Mūsā ﷺ said to him, {Have you made a hole in it to drown its people? You have certainly done a grave thing. He said, “Did I not say that you will never be able to have patience with me?” He said, “Do not take me to task for what I forgot, and do not burden me in my affair with difficulty.” So they set out until when they met} [al-Kahf: 71] boys playing. He said, ‘He went to one of them, according to apparent judgment, and killed him.’ He said, ‘At that Mūsā was terrified with a dreadful terror. {He said, “Have you killed a pure soul for other than a soul? You have certainly done a dreadful thing.”} [al-Kahf: 74].’ The Messenger of God ﷺ said, ‘At this point, may God have mercy on us and on Mūsā. Had he not hastened, he would have seen wonders, but he was seized by a sense of shame before his companion.’ He said, {He said, “If I ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have obtained from me an excuse.”} [al-Kahf: 76] And had he been patient, he would have seen wonders. He said, ‘Whenever he mentioned any of the prophets, he began with himself: May God have mercy on us and on my brother this one. May God have mercy on us.’ He said, {So they set out until when they came to the people of a town} [al-Kahf: 77], a stingy people. They went around the gatherings, {they asked its people for food, but they refused to entertain them as guests. They found in it a wall about to collapse, so he set it upright. He said, “If you wished, you could have taken a payment for it.” He said, “This is the parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of what you could not be patient over. As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea} [al-Kahf: 77] to the end of the verse. So when the one who was seizing them came, he found it damaged and passed it by, and they repaired it with a plank. And as for the boy, he was stamped as a disbeliever on the day he was stamped; his parents had become attached to him, and had he reached maturity he would have overwhelmed them with transgression and disbelief. {So we intended that their Lord should replace him for them with one better in purity and closer in mercy. And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city} [al-Kahf: 80], the verse.
