أَخْبَرَنَا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ دَاوُدَ قَالَ سَلَمَةُ بْنُ نُبَيْطٍ أَخْبَرَنَا نُعَيْمُ بْنُ أَبِي هِنْدٍ عَنْ نُبَيْطِ بْنِ شَرِيطٍ عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لَمَّا قُبِضَ قَالَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ مِنَّا أَمِيرٌ وَمِنْكُمْ أَمِيرٌ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ مَنْ لَهُ مِثْلُ هَذِهِ الثَّلَاثِ {إِذْ هُمَا فِي الْغَارِ} [التوبة 40] مَنْ هُمَا؟ {إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ} [التوبة 40] مَنْ هُوَ؟ {لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللهَ مَعَنَا} [التوبة 40] مَنْ هُمَا؟ ثُمَّ بَسَطَ يَدَهُ وَبَايَعَهُ النَّاسُ بِيعَةً حَسَنَةً جَمِيلَةً
Translation

✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, the Ansar said: "From us a leader and from you a leader." 'Umar said: "Who has the like of these three? {When they two were in the cave} [At-Tawbah: 40] – who were the two? {When he said to his companion} [At-Tawbah: 40] – who was he? {Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us} [At-Tawbah: 40] – who were the two?" Then he extended his hand and the people gave him a good and beautiful pledge of allegiance.
