أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ حَدَّثَهُ

أَنَّ رَجُلًا خَاصَمَ الزُّبَيْرَ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي شِرَاجِ الْحَرَّةِ الَّتِي كَانُوا يَسْقُونَ بِهَا النَّخْلَ فَقَالَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ سَرِّحِ الْمَاءَ يَمُرُّ فَأَبَى عَلَيْهِمْ فَاخْتَصَمُوا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِلزُّبَيْرِ اسْقِ يَا زُبَيْرُ ثُمَّ أَرْسِلْ إِلَى جَارِكَ فَغَضِبَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَنْ كَانَ ابْنَ عَمَّتِكَ فَتَلَوَّنَ وَجْهُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ «يَا زُبَيْرُ اسْقِ ثُمَّ احْبِسِ الْمَاءَ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ إِلَى الْجَدْرِ» قَالَ الزُّبَيْرُ وَاللهِ إِنِّي أَحْسِبُ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ نَزَلَتْ فِي ذَلِكَ {فَلَا وَرَبِّكَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ} [النساء 65]

✧ A man disputed with al-Zubayr before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the streams of the ḥarrah from which they irrigated the date palms. The Anṣārī said, 'Let the water flow.' Al-Zubayr refused them, so they disputed before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to al-Zubayr, 'Irrigate, O Zubayr, then release the water to your neighbor.' The Anṣārī became angry and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, is it because he is your cousin?' The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed color, then he said, 'O Zubayr, irrigate, then hold back the water until it returns to the wall.' Al-Zubayr said, 'By Allah, I think this verse was revealed concerning that: {But no, by your Lord, they will not believe} [al-Nisāʾ 65].'
