✧ The day of 'Ashura' was a day the Quraysh used to fast in the Jahiliyyah, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast it. When he came to Madinah, he fasted it and commanded its fasting. Then the fast of Ramadan was revealed, and Ramadan became the obligatory fast. So whoever wished fasted the day of 'Ashura', and whoever wished left it.
