أَخْبَرَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ أَخْزَمَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ هِشَامٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ

أَنَّ يَهُودِيًّا مَرَّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ألَا أَضْرِبُ عُنُقَهُ؟ فَقَالَ لَا إِذَا سَلَّمُوا عَلَيْكُمْ فَقُولُوا وَعَلَيْكُمْ

Translation

✧ A Jew passed by the Prophet ﷺ and said, “As-sām ʿalaykum (death be upon you).” ʿUmar said, “O Messenger of Allah, shall I strike his neck?” He said, “No. When they greet you, say, ‘Wa ʿalaykum (and upon you).’”
