قَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى: حَدَّثَنَا أُمَيَّةُ بْنُ بِسْطَامٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرٌ، حَدَّثَنَا مَسْلَمَةُ بْنُ مُحَارِبٍ، عَنْ شَيْخٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ قَالَ:
إِنَّ الْحَكَمَ بْنَ عَمْرٍو الْغِفَارِيَّ كَتَبَ إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ ؓ مِنْ خُرَاسَانَ: إِنَّ الْمُشْرِكِينَ - يَعْنِي - قَدْ تَكَاثَرُوا عَلَيْهِ، فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ: أَنِ اجْعَلْ بَكْرَ بْنَ وَائِلٍ يَلُونَهُمْ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ الْعَدُوَّ لَا يَظْهَرُ عَلَى بَكْرِ بْنِ وَائِلٍ

✧ Al-Hakam b. 'Amr al-Ghifari wrote to Mu'awiyah ؓ from Khurasan: 'The polytheists - meaning - have become numerous against him.' So he wrote to him: 'Appoint Bakr b. Wa'il to be in charge of them, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: The enemy will not prevail over Bakr b. Wa'il.'
