✧ Rebuke of Increasing in Worldly Matters

قَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، ثَنَا حَسَنُ بْنُ مُوسَى، ثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، حَدَّثَنِي حُيَيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ ؓ، قَالَ:

جَاءَ حَمْزَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ ؓ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، اجْعَلْنِي عَلَى شَيْءٍ أَعِيشُ بِهِ. فَقَالَ ﷺ: « يَا حَمْزَةُ، أَنَفْسٌ تُحْيِيهَا أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكَ أَمْ نَفْسٌ تُمِيتُهَا ؟ » قَالَ ؓ: نَفْسٌ أُحْيِيهَا. قَالَ ﷺ: « عَلَيْكَ نَفْسَكَ

✧ Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ؓ came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, appoint me over something by which I may live." He ﷺ said: "O Ḥamzah, is a soul you keep alive dearer to you, or a soul you put to death?" He ؓ said: "A soul I keep alive." He ﷺ said: "Then take care of your own soul."
