✧ Giving precedence in command to the best reciter over the nobler and older

قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو تُمَيْلَةَ يَحْيَى بْنُ وَاضِحٍ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ قَالَ:

إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَرْسَلَ سَرِيَّةً فَاسْتَقْرَأَهُمْ، فَقَرَأَ شَيْخٌ، ثُمَّ قَرَأَ شَابٌّ فَاسْتَعْمَلَهُ، فَقَالَ الشَّيْخُ: اسْتَعْمَلْتَهُ عَلَيَّ، وَأَنَا أَكْبَرُ مِنْهُ سِنًّا ؟ فَقَالَ ﷺ: إِنَّهُ أَكْثَرُ مِنْكَ قُرْآنًا.

Translation

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent out a military expedition and had them recite. An old man recited, then a young man recited, so he appointed the young man. The old man said: "You appointed him over me, while I am older than him in age?" He ﷺ said: "He has more Qur'an than you."
