What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

machine translationMuḥammad b. Marwān has other hadiths besides those I mentioned, and most of what he narrates is not preserved (ghayr maḥfūẓ), and the weakness in his narrations is clear.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationIts narrators are trustworthy (thiqāt).

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationHishām b. Ḥassān narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. ʿAbd al-Salām b. Ḥarb and Muḥammad b. Marwān al-ʿUqaylī narrated it from Hishām, from Ibn Sīrīn, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, while others narrate it from Hishām as a statement of the Companion (mawqūf). Likewise Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī and others narrate it from Ibn Sīrīn as mawqūf.

machine translationIn its chain is Jamīl b. al-Ḥusayn al-ʿAtakī. ʿAbdān said of him that he is a transgressor who lies, meaning in his speech. Ibn ʿAdī said: I have not heard anyone speak against him other than ʿAbdān; he is not problematic, and I do not know of any objectionable (munkar) hadith of his. Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in al-Thiqāt and said he narrates strange reports (yughrib). He, Ibn Khuzaymah and al-Ḥākim transmitted from him in their ṣaḥīḥ collections. Maslamah al-Andalusī said he is trustworthy (thiqah). The remaining men of the chain are trustworthy (thiqāt).

machine translationConcerning this Jamīl, ʿAbdān said: a lying transgressor, wicked. Ibn ʿAdī said: I do not know of any objectionable (munkar) hadith of his; ʿAbdān only attributed transgression to him. As for Ibn Ḥibbān, he mentioned him in his Thiqāt, and Ibn Khuzaymah narrated this hadith from him. As for Ibn al-Jawzī, he said in his Taḥqīq that he is unknown, which is strange, and he contradicted this statement in his book al-Ḍuʿafāʾ, where he quoted what we mentioned first. His teacher Muḥammad b. Marwān: Abū Zurʿah said, he is not that reliable in my view. Aḥmad said: I saw him when he had narrated some hadiths, and I deliberately did not write them down. As for Abū Dāwūd, he said: truthful (ṣadūq). Ibn Maʿīn said: acceptable (ṣāliḥ).

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationʿAbd al-Ḥaqq in al-Aḥkām quoted him as saying of it that it is an authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) hadith.
