machine translationAl-Qaʿqāʿ b. Ḥakīm narrates it from Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Sammān from Abū Hurayrah. Suhayl b. Abī Ṣāliḥ also narrated it, and there is disagreement about him. Ḥammād b. Salamah, Ibn Abī Dhiʾb, Ibn Jurayj, Wuhayb and Zuhayr b. Muḥammad narrated it from Suhayl from his father from Abū Hurayrah. Likewise Ḥarmalah said, from al-Shāfiʿī, from Ibn ʿUyaynah, from Suhayl, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah. Al-Ḥumaydī and Ibn Abī ʿUmar differed from him: they narrated it from Ibn ʿUyaynah from Suhayl from his father from Isḥāq, the freedman of Zāʾidah, from Abū Hurayrah. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. al-Mukhtār said the same from Suhayl. Ismāʿīl b. Jaʿfar differed from them and narrated it from Suhayl from his father from Isḥāq, the freedman of Zāʾidah, from Abū Hurayrah as a statement of the Companion (mawqūf). Ismāʿīl b. ʿUlayyah differed from them as well and narrated it from Suhayl from Isḥāq, the freedman of Zāʾidah, from Abū Hurayrah as mawqūf, without mentioning Abū Ṣāliḥ. It seems that Suhayl was inconsistent (yaḍṭarib) in it.

machine translationI do not know of any established hadith on 'whoever washes a deceased person, let him bathe'; and had it been established, we would be obliged to act on it.

machine translationIt is reported that the majority declared this hadith weak (ḍaʿīf), and al-Tirmidhī was criticised for grading it good (ḥasan).
machine translationThe upshot is that its attribution to the Prophet (marfūʿ) is weak, and its being a statement of the Companion (mawqūf) is sound (ṣaḥīḥ).

machine translationIbn Abī Dhiʾb narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Ḥabbān b. ʿAlī narrated it from Ibn Abī Dhiʾb from al-Maqburī from Abū Hurayrah. Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān, Yaḥyā b. Ayyūb, al-Darāwardī, Ḥajjāj b. Muḥammad, ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. al-Nuʿmān and Ibn Abī Fudayk differed from him: they narrated it from Ibn Abī Dhiʾb from Ṣāliḥ, the freedman of al-Tawʾamah, from Abū Hurayrah. Ibn Abī Fudayk gave an anomalous (gharīb) report of it with two other chains: one from Ibn Abī Dhiʾb from Suhayl b. Abī Ṣāliḥ from his father from Abū Hurayrah, and the other from Ibn Abī Dhiʾb from al-Qāsim b. ʿAbbās from ʿAmr b. ʿUmayr from Abū Hurayrah. The hadith of al-Maqburī is more sound (aṣaḥḥ).
