✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up at night to pray, so I came and stood beside him. He began [reciting] Al-Baqarah, and I thought: he intends the hundred [verses], but he went beyond it. I thought: he intends the two hundred, but he went beyond it. I thought: he will finish it, and he finished it. Then he began An-Nisa' and recited it. Then he recited Al 'Imran. Then he bowed for nearly as long as he recited. Then he raised [his head] and said: "Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana laka al-hamd" for nearly as long as he bowed. Then he prostrated for about as long as he had raised. Then he raised [his head] and said: "Rabbi ighfir li" for about as long as he prostrated. Then he prostrated for about as long as he had raised. Then he stood up for the second [rak'ah]." Al-A'mash said: "He would not pass by a verse of warning without seeking refuge or protection, nor a verse of mercy without asking, nor a verse of – meaning exaltation – without glorifying."
