✧ Abd al-Malik b. Marwan wrote to al-Hajjaj b. Yusuf commanding him not to contradict Ibn Umar in any matter of Hajj. When it was the Day of Arafah, Ibn Umar came to him when the sun had declined, and I was with him, and he called out beside his pavilion: Where is this one? Al-Hajjaj came out to him wearing a yellow-dyed cloak and said to him: What is the matter with you, O Abu Abd al-Rahman? He said: Departure, if you want the Sunnah. He said: Yes. Let me pour water over myself, then I will come out to you. So he waited for him until he came out, and he walked between me and my father. I said to him: If you want to follow the Sunnah, then shorten the sermon and hasten the standing. He began looking at Ibn Umar so that he might hear that from him. When Ibn Umar saw that, he said: He spoke the truth.
