حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْجَبَّارِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الزِّنَادِ، عَنِ الْأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ:

مَثَلُ الْمُنْفِقِ وَالْبَخِيلِ، كَمَثَلِ رَجُلَيْنِ عَلَيْهِمَا جُبَّتَانِ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ مِنْ لَدُنْ ثَدْيَيْهِمَا إِلَى تَرَاقِيهِمَا، فَإِذَا أَرَادَ الْمُتَصَدِّقُ وَالْمُنْفِقُ أَنْ يُنْفِقَ أُسْبِغَتْ عَلَيْهِ الدِّرْعُ أَوْ مَرَّتْ حَتَّى تَقَعَ عَلَى بَنَانِهِ وَتَعْفُوَ أَثَرَهُ، وَإِذَا أَرَادَ الْبَخِيلُ أَنْ يُنْفِقَ قَلَصَتْ، وَأَخَذَتْ كُلُّ حَلْقَةٍ مَوْضِعَهَا حَتَّى أَخَذَتْ بِتَرْقُوَتِهِ أَوْ بِعُنُقِهِ ". فَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ: أَشْهَدُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنِّي رَأَيْتُهُ يَقُولُ بِيَدِهِ: وَهُوَ يُوَسِّعُهَا وَلَا تَتَّسِعُ

Translation

✧ The example of the one who spends and the miser is like the example of two men upon whom are two iron coats from their chests to their collarbones. When the one who gives charity and spends wants to spend, the coat of mail becomes ample upon him, or it passes until it reaches his fingertips and covers his trace. When the miser wants to spend, it shrinks and every ring takes its place until it seizes his collarbone or his neck.” Abu Hurayrah said: I bear witness that I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying with his hand: “He was widening it and it would not widen.”
