حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا حَمَّادٌ - يَعْنِي ابْنَ زَيْدٍ - عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ زِرٍّ قَالَ:

قُلْتُ لِأُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ: أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ؛ فَإِنَّ صَاحِبَنَا - يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ - سُئِلَ عَنْهَا، فَقَالَ: مَنْ يَقُمِ الْحَوْلَ يُصِبْهَا. قَالَ: " رَحِمَ اللهُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، لَقَدْ عَلِمَ أَنَّهَا فِي رَمَضَانَ، وَلَكِنَّهُ كَرِهَ أَنْ يَتَّكِلُوا، أَوْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ لَا يَتَّكِلُوا، وَاللهِ إِنَّهَا لَفِي رَمَضَانَ لَيْلَةَ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ، لَا يَسْتَثْنِي ". قَالَ: قُلْتُ: أَبَا الْمُنْذِرِ، أَنَّى عَلِمْتَ ذَلِكَ ؟ قَالَ: بِالْآيَةِ الَّتِي أَخْبَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ. قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِزِرٍّ: مَا الْآيَةُ ؟ قَالَ: تَطْلُعُ الشَّمْسُ صَبِيحَةَ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةِ لَيْسَ لَهَا شُعَاعٌ مِثْلَ الطَّسْتِ حَتَّى تَرْتَفِعَ

Translation

✧ I said to Ubayy b. Ka'b: Tell me about Laylat al-Qadr, for our companion—meaning Ibn Mas'ud—was asked about it and said: Whoever stands in prayer the whole year will attain it. He said: "May God have mercy on Abu 'Abd al-Rahman. He knew that it is in Ramadan, but he disliked that they should rely on that, or he loved that they should not rely on it. By God, it is in Ramadan on the night of the twenty-seventh, without exception." He said: I said: Abu al-Mundhir, how did you know that? He said: By the sign that the Messenger of God ﷺ informed us. He said: I said to Zirr: What is the sign? He said: The sun rises on the morning of that night with no rays, like a large dish, until it rises high.
