✧ In His saying, Mighty and Majestic: “And do not recite [too] loudly in your prayer or [too] quietly” (Q 17:110), he said: “It was revealed while the Messenger of God ﷺ was hiding in Makkah. When he prayed with his companions, he would recite the Qur'an aloud.” Al-Dawraqi said: “He raised his voice with the Qur'an.” They both said: “The polytheists, when they heard it, would revile the Qur'an, the One who sent it down, and the one who brought it. So God said to His Prophet ﷺ: ‘And do not recite [too] loudly in your prayer,’ meaning in your recitation, ‘lest the polytheists hear and revile the Qur'an; and do not recite [too] quietly,’ away from your companions, ‘lest they not hear; but seek a way between that’ (Q 17:110).” Al-Dawraqi said: “Away from your companions, lest you make them hear.”
