أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مَوْلَى ثَقِيفٍ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الْأُمَوِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبَّادِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ
سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ وَقَدْ كَانَ النَّاسُ انْهَزَمُوا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى انْتَهَى بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى دُونِ الْأَعْرَاضِ عَلَى جَبَلٍ بِنَاحِيَةِ الْمَدِينَةِ ثُمَّ رَجَعُوا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَقَدْ كَانَ حَنْظَلَةُ بْنُ أَبِي عَامِرٍ الْتَقَى هُوَ وَأَبُو سُفْيَانَ بْنُ حَرْبٍ فَلَمَّا اسْتَعْلَاهُ حَنْظَلَةُ رَآهُ شَدَّادُ بْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ فَعَلَاهُ شَدَّادٌ بِالسَّيْفِ حَتَّى قَتَلَهُ وَقَدْ كَادَ يَقْتُلُ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ صَاحِبَكُمْ حَنْظَلَةَ تُغَسِّلُهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ فَسَلُوا صَاحِبَتَهُ» فَقَالَتْ خَرَجَ وَهُوَ جُنُبٌ لَمَّا سَمِعَ الْهَائِعَةَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «فَذَاكَ قَدْ غَسَّلَتْهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ»

✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, while the people had fled from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ such that some of them reached beyond al-A‘rad, on a mountain near Madinah, and then returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Hanzala b. Abi ‘Amir met Abu Sufyan b. Harb. When Hanzala overpowered him, Shaddad b. al-Aswad saw him and struck Hanzala with his sword, killing him. He had almost killed Abu Sufyan. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Your companion Hanzala is being washed by the angels, so ask his wife.” She said, “He went out in a state of major ritual impurity when he heard the cry of battle.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “That is why the angels washed him.”
