أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بُجَيْرٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرٌ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ قَيْسٍ عَنْ سَعْدٍ قَالَ

«وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأَوَّلُ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ رَمَى بِسَهْمٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَإِنْ كُنَّا لَنَغْزُو مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا لَنَا طَعَامٌ نَأْكُلُهُ إِلَّا وَرَقُ الْحُبْلَةِ وَهَذَا السَّمُرُ حَتَّى إِنْ كَانَ أَحَدُنَا لَيَضَعُ كَمَا تَضَعُ الشَّاةُ مَا لَهُ خِلْطٌ ثُمَّ أَصْبَحَتْ بَنُو أَسَدٍ تُعَزِّرُنِي عَلَى الدِّينِ لَقَدْ خِبْتُ إِذًا وَضَلَّ عَمَلِي»

Translation

✧ By Allah, I am the first Arab who shot an arrow in the path of Allah. We used to raid with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ having no food to eat except leaves of the hubla and this samur tree, until one of us would defecate like a sheep defecates, with no mixture. Then the Banu Asad began disciplining me in religion. If so, I have lost and my deeds have gone astray.
