It reached Ibn ʿUmar, while he was at some property of his, that al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī had set out for Iraq. So he caught up with him at a distance of two or three days' travel and said, "Where are you going?" He said, "These are the letters of the people of Iraq and their pledge of allegiance." He said, "Do not do it." But he refused. Then Ibn ʿUmar said to him, "Jibrīl, peace be upon him, came to the Prophet ﷺ and gave him a choice between this world and the Hereafter. He chose the Hereafter and did not want this world. And you are a part of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; by the same token, this is what is wanted from you." But he refused. So Ibn ʿUmar embraced him and said, "I entrust you to Allah, and peace."
