✧ I entered upon A'isha and said to her: Will you not tell me about the illness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? She said: Yes, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became gravely ill and said: "Have the people prayed?" I said: No, O Messenger of Allah, they are waiting for you. He said: "Put water for me in the tub." We did so, and he ﷺ performed ghusl. Then he tried to rise but fainted. Then he regained consciousness and said: "Have the people prayed?" We said: No, O Messenger of Allah, and they are waiting for you. She said: The people were gathered in the mosque waiting for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the last evening prayer. She said: So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man to Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. The messenger came to him and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commands you to lead the people in prayer. Abu Bakr, who was a tender-hearted man, said: O Umar, lead the people in prayer. Umar said: You are more entitled to that. So Abu Bakr led them in prayer during those days. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt some relief and went out supported by two men, one of whom was al-Abbas b. Abd al-Muttalib, while Abu Bakr was leading the people in prayer. When Abu Bakr saw him, he moved to step back, but he gestured to him not to step back. He said to them: "Seat me beside Abu Bakr." So they seated him beside Abu Bakr. She said: Abu Bakr prayed while following the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, standing, and the people prayed following the prayer of Abu Bakr, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was seated. Ubayd Allah said: I entered upon Ibn Abbas and said to him: Shall I present to you what A'isha narrated to me about the illness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: Yes. So I narrated her hadith about the illness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He did not object to anything of it except that he said: Did she not name for you the man who was with al-Abbas? I said: No. He said: It was Ali.
