✧ Fear and piety

أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ مُجَاشِعٍ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُعَاذِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ رِبْعِيِّ بْنِ حِرَاشٍ عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ

«تُوُفِّيَ رَجُلٌ كَانَ نَبَّاشًا فقَالَ لِوَلَدِهِ احْرِقُونِي ثُمَّ اسْحَقُونِي فَذُرُّونِي فِي الرِّيحِ فَسُئِلَ مَا صَنَعْتَ؟ قَالَ مَخَافَتُكَ يَا رَبِّ قَالَ فَغَفَرَ لَهُ»

✧ A man who was a grave-digger died, and he said to his son: 'Burn me, then grind me, and scatter me in the wind.' He was asked: 'What have you done?' He said: 'Out of fear of You, my Lord.' He said: 'So He forgave him.'
