✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me, al-Zubayr, Talhah, and al-Miqdad b. al-Aswad, saying, 'Go until you reach the garden of Khakh, for there is a woman with a letter. Take it from her.' We set off, our horses racing, until we reached the garden. There was the woman. We said to her, 'Bring out the letter.' She said, 'I have no letter.' We said, 'By Allah, you will bring out the letter or we will strip you of your clothes.' She took it out from her braids. We brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and in it was from Hatib b. Abi Balta'ah to some of the polytheists of Makkah, informing them of some of the affairs of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'O Hatib, what is this?' He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, do not be hasty with me. I was a man allied to Quraysh, not one of them. The emigrants with you have relatives in Makkah who protect their relatives and families. I had no relative to protect my family, so I wanted, if I missed out on that kinship, to make a favor with them so they would protect my relatives and family. By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I did not do this as apostasy from my religion or out of satisfaction with disbelief after Islam.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'This man has told you the truth.' Umar said, 'O Messenger of Allah, let me strike the neck of this hypocrite.' He ﷺ said, 'He witnessed Badr. What do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said, "Do what you wish, for I have forgiven you."' And He revealed concerning him: {O you who believe, do not take My enemy and your enemy as allies} the verse.
