✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained in Makkah seven years, following people in their dwellings at ʿUkāẓ, Majannah, and the festivals at Minā, saying: Who will give me refuge and help me so that I may convey the messages of my Lord? So much so that a man would come from Yemen or from Miṣr, and his people would come to him and say: Beware of the lad of Quraysh; do not let him tempt you. And he walked among their saddles while they pointed at him with their fingers until Allah sent us from Yathrib, and we gave him refuge and believed him. A man among us would go out, believe in him, teach him the Qurʾān, and return to his family, and they would become Muslims through his Islam, until there remained no dwelling among the dwellings of the Anṣār but that there was in it a group of Muslims openly professing Islam. Then we gathered and said: Until when shall we leave the Prophet ﷺ to be driven away in the mountains of Makkah and to fear? So seventy men from us traveled to him until they came to him at the festival, and we appointed with him the pledge of al-ʿAqabah. We gathered there from one man and two men until we were complete, and we said: O Messenger of Allah, on what shall we pledge allegiance to you? He said: You pledge allegiance to me on hearing and obedience in activity and laziness, on spending in hardship and ease, on enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and that you will say it without caring for the blame of any blamer for the sake of Allah, and that you will help me and protect me when I come to you from what you protect yourselves, your wives, and your children. And for you is Paradise. So we rose to him and pledged allegiance to him. Asʿad b. Zurārah took his hand, and he was among the youngest of them, and said: Gently, O people of Yathrib, for we have not struck the livers of camels except while we know that he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and that his coming out today is a contention with all the Arabs and the killing of your best men and the swords will bite you. So either you be patient on that, and your reward is with Allah, or you fear cowardice from yourselves, so make that clear, for it is a better excuse for you. They said: Remove your hand from us, for by Allah we will never abandon this pledge ever. So we rose to him and pledged allegiance to him, and he imposed on us and stipulated that He would give us in return for that Paradise.
