✧ «When Adam was sent down to the earth, the angels said: 'O Lord, will You place therein one who will cause corruption therein and shed blood, while we glorify You with praise and sanctify You?' He said: 'I know what you do not know.' They said: 'O our Lord, we are more obedient to You than the children of Adam.' Allah said to His angels: 'Bring two angels from among the angels so that We may see how they act.' They said: 'O our Lord, Harut and Marut.' He said: 'Descend to the earth.' Then Venus was made to appear to them as a woman of the most beautiful of humans. They came to her and asked her for herself. She said: 'No, by Allah, not until you speak this word of associating partners with Allah.' They said: 'By Allah, we will never associate anything with Allah.' She went away from them, then came back carrying a child. They asked her for herself. She said: 'No, by Allah, not until you kill this child.' They said: 'By Allah, we will never kill him.' She went away, then came back carrying a cup of wine. They asked her for herself. She said: 'No, by Allah, not until you drink this wine.' So they drank and became intoxicated, then they had intercourse with her and killed the child. When they sobered up, the woman said: 'By Allah, you did not leave any sin that you did not commit when you were intoxicated.' Then they were given a choice between the punishment of this world and the punishment of the Hereafter, and they chose the punishment of this world.»

machine translationThere is disagreement concerning it on the authority of Nāfiʿ. Mūsā b. Jubayr narrated it from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, from the Prophet ﷺ. Mūsā b. ʿUqbah differed from him and narrated it from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, from Kaʿb al-Aḥbār, in the narration of al-Thawrī from Mūsā b. ʿUqbah. Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān said, from Mūsā b. ʿUqbah, from Sālim, from his father, from Kaʿb.
