✧ I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and my she-camel was hobbled at the door when a group from Banū Tamīm entered upon him and said, “O Messenger of Allah, we have come to you to gain understanding in the religion and to ask you about the beginning of this matter: what was it?” He ﷺ said, “Allah existed and there was nothing other than Him, and His Throne was upon the water, then He wrote in the Remembrance everything, then He created the heavens and the earth.”

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationAmong the authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) hadiths is the hadith of ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn: "Allah was, and there was nothing other than Him."

  • Taḥāwī

machine translationAl-Aʿmash differed regarding which of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ this hadith goes back to. Al-Aʿmash mentioned that it was ʿImrān b. al-Ḥuṣayn, while al-Masʿūdī mentioned that it was Buraydah b. al-Ḥuṣayb. The correct view in our opinion is what al-Aʿmash said about it. What indicates this is that al-Thawrī narrated it from Jāmiʿ b. Shaddād, agreeing with al-Aʿmash and opposing al-Masʿūdī, even though he fell short of some of its text that is in their two narrations.
