أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدُ بْنُ مُسَرْهَدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى عَنْ عَوْفٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ إِنِّي رَجُلٌ مَعِيشَتِي مِنْ هَذِهِ التَّصَاوِيرِ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدًا ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَنْ صَوَّرَ صُورَةٍ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يُعَذِّبُهُ حَتَّى يَنْفُخَ فِيهِ الرُّوحَ وَلَيْسَ بِنَافِخٍ» فَاصْفَرَّ لَوْنُهُ فَقَالَ إِنْ كُنْتَ لَابُدَّ فَعَلَيْكَ بِالشَّجَرِ وَمَا لَيْسَ فِيهِ رُوحٌ

Translation

✧ I was with Ibn Abbas when a man came to him and said, "I am a man whose livelihood comes from these images." Ibn Abbas said, "I heard Muhammad ﷺ say: 'Whoever makes an image, Allah will punish him until he blows the soul into it, and he will never be able to do so.'" His color turned pale. He said, "If you must, then make trees and things that do not have a soul."
