أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ الْبَرَاءَ يَقُولُ وَجَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا عُمَارَةَ وَلَّيْتَ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ؟ فَقَالَ أَمَّا أَنَا فَأَشْهَدُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يُوَلِّ وَلَكِنْ عَجِلَ سَرَعَانُ الْقَوْمِ فَرَشَقَتْهُمْ هَوَازِنُ وَأَبُو سُفْيَانَ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ آخِذٌ بِرَأْسِ بَغْلَتِهِ الْبَيْضَاءِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ « أَنَا النَّبِيُّ لَا كَذِبْ أَنَا ابْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ»

✧ I heard al-Barāʾ say when a man came to him and said: O Abū ʿUmārah, did you turn in flight on the day of Hunayn? He said: As for me, I bear witness that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not turn in flight; but the hasty ones of the people rushed ahead, and Hawāzin shot arrows at them while Abū Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith was holding the head of his white mule, and he was saying: “I am the Prophet, no lie; I am the son of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib.”
