✧ ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb saw a striped silk robe at the door of the mosque and said: “O Messenger of Allah, if only you would buy this and wear it on Fridays and for delegations when they come to you.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Only those who have no share in the Hereafter wear this.” Then some robes of that kind came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he gave ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb one of them. ʿUmar said: “O Messenger of Allah, you have clothed me with it, yet you said about the robe of ʿUṭārid what you said.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I did not clothe you with it for you to wear it.” So ʿUmar gave it as clothing to a polytheist brother of his in Makkah.
