أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ نَشِيطٍ الْوَعْلَانِيُّ عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ عَنْ دُخَيْنٍ أَبِي الْهَيْثَمِ كَاتِبِ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ قَالَ

قُلْتُ لِعُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ إِنَّ لَنَا جِيرَانًا يَشْرَبُونَ الْخَمْرَ وَأَنَا دَاعٍ الشُّرْطَ لِيَأْخُذُوهُمْ فقَالَ عُقْبَةُ وَيْحَكَ لَا تَفْعَلْ وَلَكِنْ عِظْهُمْ وَهَدِّدْهُمْ قَالَ إِنِّي نَهَيْتُهُمْ فَلَمْ يَنْتَهُوا وَإِنِّي دَاعٍ الشُّرْطَ لِيَأْخُذُوهُمْ فقَالَ عُقْبَةُ وَيْحَكَ لَا تَفْعَلْ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَنْ سَتَرَ عَوْرَةَ مُؤْمِنٍ فَكَأَنَّمَا اسْتَحْيَى مَوْءُودَةً فِي قَبْرِهَا»

✧ I said to 'Uqbah b. 'Amir, 'We have neighbors who drink wine, and I am going to call the police to seize them.' 'Uqbah said, 'Woe to you! Do not do that. Rather, admonish them and warn them.' He said, 'I forbade them but they did not stop, and I am going to call the police to seize them.' 'Uqbah said, 'Woe to you! Do not do that, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Whoever conceals the fault of a believer, it is as if he brought back to life a girl buried alive in her grave."'
