✧ We were sitting with Abdullah while he was reclining among us. A man came to him and said: There is a storyteller telling stories at the gates of Kinda, claiming that the verse of the Smoke will come and seize the breaths of the disbelievers, and the believers will get from it something like a cold. Abdullah sat up, angry, and said: O people, fear Allah. Whoever among you knows something, let him say it; and whoever does not know, let him say: Allah knows best. For it is better for one of you to say about what he does not know: Allah knows best. Allah, Mighty and Exalted, said to His Prophet ﷺ: {Say: I do not ask you for any reward for it, and I am not of the pretentious} (Surah Sad 38:86). When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw people turning away, he said: 'O Allah, seven years like the seven of Joseph.' Then a year (of famine) seized them until they ate carrion and hides, and one of them would look at the sky and see something like smoke. Abu Sufyan came to him and said: O Muhammad, you have come commanding obedience to Allah and maintaining kinship, and your people have perished from hunger, so supplicate to Allah for them. Allah, Mighty and Exalted, said: {So watch for the day when the sky will bring a visible smoke} (Surah al-Dukhan 44:10), {The day We seize with the greatest seizure; indeed, We will take retribution} (Surah al-Dukhan 44:16). The seizure is the day of Badr, and the verse of the smoke, the seizure, the punishment, and the Romans have passed.
