أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُكْرَمِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْبِرْتِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمَدِينِيِّ حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرِ بْنِ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ سَمِعْتُ النَّوَّاسَ بْنَ سَمْعَانَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ يَقُولُ

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْبِرِّ وَالْإِثْمِ فقَالَ «الْبِرُّ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ وَالْإِثْمُ مَا حَكَّ فِي نَفْسِكَ وَكَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَطَّلِعَ عَلَيْهِ النَّاسُ»

✧ I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about righteousness and sin. He said: “Righteousness is good character, and sin is what wavers in your soul and you dislike that people should come to know it.”
