أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْغَفَّارِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ الْحَجَّاجَ بْنَ يُوسُفَ قَالَ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ «أَلِّفُوَا الْقُرْآنَ كَمَا أَلَّفَهُ جِبْرَائِيلُ السُّورَةُ الَّتِي يُذْكَرُ فِيهَا الْبَقَرَةُ السُّورَةُ الَّتِي يُذْكَرُ فِيهَا آلُ عِمْرَانَ السُّورَةُ الَّتِي يُذْكَرُ فِيهَا النِّسَاءُ» قَالَ الْأَعْمَشُ فَلَقِيتُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ النَّخَعِيَّ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَسَبَّهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ

✧ I heard al-Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf say while he was on the pulpit, “Arrange the Qurʾān as Jibrāʾīl arranged it: the surah in which the cow (al-Baqarah) is mentioned, the surah in which the family of ʿImrān (Āl ʿImrān) is mentioned, the surah in which the women (al-Nisāʾ) is mentioned.” Al-Aʿmash said: I met Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī and told him, and he cursed him. Then Ibrāhīm said:

  • حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ حِينَ رَمَى جَمْرَةَ الْعَقَبَةِ فَاسْتَبْطَنَ الْوَادِيَ فَرَمَاهَا مِنْ بَطْنِ الْوَادِي بِسَبْعِ حَصَيَاتٍ يُكَبِّرُ مَعَ كُلِّ حَصَاةٍ فَقُلْتُ «يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ إِنَّ النَّاسَ يَرْمُونَهَا مِنْ فَوْقِهَا» فَقَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ «هَذَا وَالَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ مَقَامُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ»
