✧ When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, granted His Messenger ﷺ victory over Makkah, Hudhayl killed a man from Banu Layth in retaliation for a slain man of theirs in the pre-Islamic era. That reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he stood and said: "Allah, Mighty and Majestic, withheld the elephant from Makkah and gave His Messenger and the believers authority over it. It was not lawful for anyone before me, nor will it be lawful for anyone after me. It was only made lawful for me for an hour of the day, and it is this hour of mine. Then it is sacred: its trees may not be cut, its thorns may not be uprooted, and its fallen items may not be picked up except by one who announces them. Whoever has a slain relative has the better of two options: either to kill or to accept blood money." A man from Yemen called Abu Shah stood and said, "O Messenger of Allah, write it down for me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Write it down for Abu Shah." Then al-'Abbas stood and said, "O Messenger of Allah, except idhkhir (a kind of grass), for we use it in our graves and our houses." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Except idhkhir."
