✧ When 'Abd Allah b. Ubayy died, his son came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Give me your shirt so that I may shroud him in it, and pray over him, and seek forgiveness for him." So he gave him his shirt and said, "When you are finished, inform me so that I may pray over him." When he had finished, he informed him. When he wanted to pray over him, 'Umar pulled him and said, "Has Allah not forbidden you to pray over the hypocrites?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "I am between two choices. Allah said: 'Ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them' [Quran 9:80]." Then the verse was revealed: "And do not pray over any of them who has died, ever, nor stand at his grave" [Quran 9:84]. So he abandoned praying over him.
