✧ A Chapter about the Prayer for the Funeral

أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ مُجَاشِعٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ حَكِيمٍ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ عَنْ خَارِجَةَ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ عَمِّهِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ وَكَانَ أَكْبَرَ مِنْ زَيْدٍ قَالَ

خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا وَرَدْنَا الْبَقِيعَ إِذَا هُوَ بِقَبْرٍ فَسَأَلَ عَنْهُ فَقَالُوا فُلَانَةُ فَعَرَفَهَا فَقَالَ «أَلَا آذَنْتُمُونِي بِهَا؟ » قَالُوا كُنْتُ قَائِلًا صَائِمًا قَالَ «فَلَا تَفْعَلُوا لَا أَعْرِفَنَّ مَا مَاتَ مِنْكُمْ مَيِّتٌ مَا كُنْتُ بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِكُمْ إِلَّا آذَنْتُمُونِي بِهِ فَإِنَّ صَلَاتِي عَلَيْهِ رَحْمَةٌ» قَالَ ثُمَّ أَتَى الْقَبْرَ فَصَفَفْنَا خَلْفَهُ وَكَبَّرَ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعًا

✧ We went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ. When we reached al-Baqi', he came to a grave and asked about it. They said: So-and-so. He recognized her and said: «Would you not have informed me about her?» They said: You were taking a nap and fasting. He said: «Do not do that. Let me not find that any of you has died while I am among you except that you inform me, for my prayer over him is a mercy.» Then he came to the grave, and we lined up behind him, and he said the takbir over it four times.
