✧ "Whoever is afflicted by a calamity, let him say: 'Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. O Allah, with You I seek reward for my calamity, so reward me in it and replace it for me with something better than it.'" When Abu Salama died, I said it, and every time I reached 'replace it for me with something better than it,' I said to myself: Who is better than Abu Salama? When her waiting period ended, Abu Bakr sent to propose to her, but she did not marry him. Then 'Umar sent to propose to her, but she did not marry him. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent 'Umar b. al-Khattab to her to propose on his behalf. She said, "Inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that I am a jealous woman and that I have children, and none of my guardians is present." So 'Umar came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said, "Return to her and say: As for your saying that you are a jealous woman, I will ask Allah to remove your jealousy. As for your saying that you have children, your children will be taken care of. As for your saying that none of your guardians is present, there is no guardian of yours, present or absent, who would dislike that." She said to her son, "O 'Umar, stand up and marry the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So he married her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would come to her to consummate the marriage, but when she saw him, she took her daughter Zaynab and placed her in her lap, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would leave. 'Ammar b. Yasir, who was her foster brother, learned of this, so he came to her and said, "Where is this ugly one with whom you have harmed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He took her and went away. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and entered upon her, and he began looking around the house and said, "What did Zaynab do?" She said, "'Ammar came and took her and went away." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ consummated the marriage with her and said, "I will not reduce you from what I gave so-and-so: two millstones, two jars, and a cushion stuffed with palm fiber." And he said, "If I stay seven nights with you, I will stay seven nights with my wives."
