أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَلْمٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ مَوْلَى حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ

كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ فَبَعَثَنِي مَبْعَثًا فَأَتَيْتُهُ وَهُوَ يَسِيرُ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَأَوْمَأَ بِيَدِهِ ثُمَّ سَلَّمْتُ فَأَشَارَ وَلَمْ يُكَلِّمْنِي فَنَادَانِي بَعْدُ وَقَالَ «إِنِّي كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي نَافِلَةً»

✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey. He sent me on an errand, and I came to him while he was riding. I greeted him with salām, and he gestured with his hand. Then I greeted again, and he gestured, but he did not speak to me. Afterwards he called me and said: 'I was praying a voluntary prayer.'
