أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ أَبِي عَوْنٍ الثَّقَفِيِّ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ قَالَ
قَالَ عُمَرُ لِسَعْدٍ قَدْ شَكَاكَ أَهْلُ الْكُوفَةِ فِي كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَقَالَ «أُطِيلُ الْأُولَيَيْنِ وَأَحْذِفُ فِي الْأُخْرَيَيْنِ وَمَا آلُو مِنْ صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ» فَقَالَ ذَاكَ الظَّنُّ بِكَ

✧ ʿUmar said to Saʿd: "The people of Kufa have complained about you in everything, even in prayer." He said: "I lengthen the first two (rakʿahs) and shorten the last two, and I do not fall short of the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said: "That is what is expected of you."
