✧ 'Gabriel came to the Prophet ﷺ when the sun declined and said, "Rise, O Muhammad, and pray Ẓuhr." So he rose and prayed Ẓuhr. Then he came to him when the shadow of everything was equal to it and said, "Rise and pray ʿAṣr." So he rose and prayed ʿAṣr. Then he came to him when the sun had set and said, "Rise and pray Maghrib." So he rose and prayed Maghrib. Then he waited until the twilight disappeared and came to him and said, "Rise and pray ʿIshāʾ." So he rose and prayed it. Then he came to him when dawn broke for the morning prayer and said, "Rise, O Muhammad, and pray." So he rose and prayed the morning prayer. The next day he came to him when the shadow of everything was equal to it and said, "Rise and pray Ẓuhr." So he rose and prayed Ẓuhr. Then he came to him when the shadow of everything was twice its length and said, "Rise and pray ʿAṣr." So he rose and prayed ʿAṣr. Then he came to him at the same time as the previous day's sunset, without any change, and said, "Rise and pray Maghrib." So he rose and prayed Maghrib. Then he came to him for ʿIshāʾ when a third of the night had passed and said, "Rise and pray ʿIshāʾ." So he rose and prayed ʿIshāʾ. Then he came to him for the morning prayer when it was very bright and said, "Rise and pray the morning prayer." So he rose and prayed the morning prayer. Then he said, "All of the time between these two is a prayer time."'

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

machine translationAs for al-Ḥusayn, he is the brother of Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, and his hadith that is narrated on the prayer times is not rejected (munkar), because others agreed with him on some of its features.

  • al-Bukhari

machine translationThe most authentic thing on the prayer times is the hadith of Jābir.

  • Aḥmad ibn Shuʿayb al-Nasāʾī

machine translationHe declared it sound (ṣaḥḥaḥahu).

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

    machine translationConnected (muttaṣil), good (ḥasan).

  • Ishbīlī

machine translationHe remained silent about it, deeming it authentic (ṣaḥīḥ).

  • Ibn al-Qaṭṭān

machine translationIt must be a mursal report, because Jābir did not mention who narrated it to him, and he did not witness that on the morning after the Night Journey, since it is known that he was one of the Anṣār who only accompanied the Prophet in Medina.
